What Antipaxos is

A small island south of Paxos, a few square kilometres in total, largely given over to vineyards and with a permanent population in the low tens. There is no town, no resort and very little road.

What it has instead is a handful of coves on its eastern side with water that has made the island famous across the Ionian. Boats come from Corfu, from Paxos and from the mainland, all for the same reason.

The tour names Mesovrika and Voutoumi as the swim stop options. Vrika is the third of the well known beaches and the one people most often search for, all three being variations on the same pale sand and clear water.

A pale seabed and clean water, which is the whole recipe. The limestone that makes the island continues underwater as sand and rock in almost white shades, and sunlight reaching it reflects back up through several metres of clear sea.

Water filters out red light first, then orange and yellow, so what returns from a pale bottom at that depth is overwhelmingly the turquoise everybody photographs. In deeper water beyond the shelf it shifts to a hard blue.

There is no river outflow, no sediment and very little weed, which is why it stays clear. That is a function of a tiny island with no agriculture beyond vines and no development to speak of.

What the swim stop is actually like

The boat anchors off the beach rather than tying up, and people go into the water from the vessel. Photographs from this operator show exactly that: swimmers spread across the shallows with the cruise boat sitting behind them.

That is a different experience from arriving at a beach. You are swimming in clear water over a visible bottom with a boat to return to, rather than lying on sand. For most people it is the better version.

How long you get is the thing to be clear about. This is a swim stop inside a day that also has caves and a village in it, so the water time is measured in tens of minutes. Guests who understood that beforehand are uniformly delighted with it.

Antipaxos day trip from Paxos, and how busy it gets

Busy, in high season. Antipaxos is small and its beaches are famous, which is an arithmetic problem no operator can solve. Photographs from the coast show a considerable number of swimmers in the water at once.

That said, swimming off a boat rather than from the sand changes the crowding considerably. The water is large and the beach is small, and most of the pressure is on the sand.

If solitude matters more to you than water colour, this is not the trip. If you want to swim in the most extraordinary water in the Ionian and do not mind other people doing the same, it delivers exactly that.

Snorkelling and what is under you

Worth doing if you have brought a mask, and this is a case where the visibility does the work rather than the wildlife. The seabed is pale sand and rock rather than reef, so it is clarity and light you are there for.

Fish are present rather than abundant: small schooling species around the rocks at the edges of the coves, the occasional larger one further out. This is the Mediterranean, which is beautiful and not densely populated.

Nothing at all is provided for this. Snorkel gear is not on the inclusion list and neither are towels, so anything you want to use in the water has to come with you from Corfu in the morning.

What to bring for it

Swimwear worn under your clothes, because changing space on a day boat is limited and the stop is not long enough to spend a chunk of it queuing. The operator's own bring list names swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a hat.

Towels are specifically excluded, which is a small detail worth catching. A quick-dry travel towel takes up almost no room and is considerably better on a boat than a hotel one.

Something for your feet if you plan to go ashore at all. The coves are a mixture of sand and shingle, and the shingle sections are genuinely unforgiving on bare soles after a few metres.

Getting the most out of it

Be ready before the boat stops. The people who get the most water time are the ones already in swimwear with a towel to hand when the anchor goes down, rather than starting to organise themselves at that moment.

Go in early rather than late. There is a natural hesitation on any boat about being the first person into the sea, and every minute spent on that hesitation is a minute of a stop that was never long.

And look down. The reason this water is famous is what it does to light, and floating face down over a pale seabed in seven metres of clear sea is the whole point of coming this far south.
